Featured Article: "The Importance of Pro-Life Education"

By Emily Duplechin

How can anyone know what they stand for if they don't know the reasons behind the beliefs? Truthfully, they are not able to. This is especially relevant in the pro-life movement, where we would have almost nothing to solidify our position if not for our reason to fight. Unfortunately however, there are a great many who call themselves pro-life and have no idea what it means, and a great many more who hate pro-lifers because they don't understand our beliefs. Some also hate us because of people who shared their knowledge in the wrong way: in anger or hate. These are only some of the reasons that Students for Life of America has made effective education one of their main pillars.

Quite possibly the most grievous of these problems is those who claim to be pro-life with no true knowledge of the meaning. Their ignorance has immense negative impacts on our mission: to abolish abortion forever. A lack of  understanding in what we stand for is most probably the cause of many circulating myths, such as the idea that pro-lifers only care about babies before birth, or that we have no concern for the mother. Both are untrue of course, but remain popular accusations from those who stand with abortion. The question is, how did these falsehoods get circulated in the first place? The sad truth is, the source was probably members of the pro-life movement itself. These individuals would have inadvertently spread the wrong message in their zeal, because they lacked proper understanding. How can we combat this? We educate ourselves. We learn what it truly means to be pro-life, and how to explain it lovingly and factually. It is our responsibility to know what we stand for, and to help others understand. That is what will drive the pro-life movement forward.

In the case of ignorance leading to miscommunication, people will naturally misunderstand the true pro-life mission. The question is how we address the issue. In my own opinion, the solution to others’ ignorance-fueled hate is very similar to the solution to ignorance within the pro-life movement: education, which starts with us. The first step is to educate ourselves. Only then can we pass on wisdom to our fellow man. The trick is to engage in polite and charitable conversation with accuracy, even with those who hold a different viewpoint. We must learn to share the truth in love, as Christ did in His own life.

Even though ignorance within the pro-life  movement has possibly spread incorrect ideas, hope is not lost. However, we cannot stand and watch as myths and lies run rampant. The responsibility lies with us to change the world for the better. But we have to do it right: with Christian charity. Remember, at the end of the day, we are all human beings, made in the image and likeness of God, and we all deserve respect. That is what the pro-life movement is all about, the overarching truth of our mission. It should be obvious from our actions. Let us learn the truth, and let our every word speak it. Loving education has and will continue to change minds and hearts. This is why Students for Life of America has made effective education one of its five pillars of activism.

Prayers

Dearest St. Joseph, at the word of an angel, you lovingly took Mary into your home. As God's humble servant, you guided the Holy Family on the road to Bethlehem, welcomed Jesus as your own son in the shelter of a manger, and fled far from your homeland for the safety of both Mother and Child.

We praise God that as their faithful protector, you never hesitated to sacrifice for those entrusted to you. May your example inspire us also to welcome, cherish, and safeguard God's most precious gift of life.

Help us to faithfully commit ourselves to the service and defense of human life -especially where it is vulnerable or threatened. Obtain for us the grace to do the will of God in all things. Amen.

"America, the ultimate test of your greatness is the way you treat every human being, but especially the weakest and most defenseless ones." – Saint Pope John Paul II, HSC SFL's patron Saint
"Education about the humanity of the child is desperately needed. People need to be shown the evil of abortion, the true agenda of abortionists, and the abuses of the abortion industry." – Lila Rose, Fighting for Life: Becoming a Force for Change in a Wounded World
“Let’s say ‘Yes’ to life and ‘No’ to death.” – Pope Francis
"This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live." - Deuteronomy 30:19
"If one feels the need of something grand, something infinite, something that makes one feel aware of God, one need not go far to find it. I think that I see something deeper, more infinite, more eternal than the ocean in the expression of the eyes of a little baby when it wakes in the morning and coos or laughs because it sees the sun shining on its cradle." – Vincent van Gogh

Defending Planned Parenthood & Big Abortion

The U. S. House of Representatives has passed the federal budget bill titled "One Big, Beautiful Bill", which contains text to defund Planned Parenthood and the big abortion industry for the next ten years. In addition, the U. S. Senate Finance committee has announced that the Senate version of the bill will also contain text to defund abortion providers. The fight continues as we urge the Senate to ensure that this aspect of the budget bill is included in the base text and is effective for ten years. It still isn't too late to visit StudentsForLifeAction.org/Defund to learn more about and sign up for Students for Life Action's month of mobilization.

In order to use the budget reconciliation process in the Senate (bypassing the necessity of supermajority approval), the bill must be in compliance with the six strict rules of the “Byrd Rule,” requiring that the bill only contain provisions that have a budgetary effect. One job of an unelected bureaucrat called the parliamentarian is to advise Senators on which provisions of budget bills aren't in compliance with this rule. In 2017, Elizabeth MacDonough, the current parliamentarian, claimed that a provision defunding Planned Parenthood originally included in that year's budget bill did not comply with the Byrd Rule. Unfortunately, John Thune (the Senate Majority Leader) started that, despite his authority to do so, he will not overrule MacDonough on any of her advice.

It is crucial that we respectfully urge the Senate Majority Leader to overrule MacDonough on the matter of defunding big abortion if she again claims that this provision doesn't relate to the budget.

Ending Abortion Pill Trafficking in Texas

Led by Texas Right to Life, a large group of pro-life organizations and state officials sent a letter to Governor Greg Abbott, urging him to call a special session of the state legislature in order to vote on SB 2880, the Women and Child Protection Act. This bill would help end illegal abortion pill trafficking in the state by holding abortionists accountable.

National Celebrate Life Weekend Approaches

National Celebrate Life Weekend is taking place on June 27th to 29th. The annual event hosted by SFLA in Washington D. C. celebrates the anniversary of the fall of Roe. It will include a rally to defund the abortion industry and a drive displaying and giving away 392,715 diapers. SFLA reports that this represents the number of unborn children aborted by Planned Parenthood between 2022 and 2023, visually symbolizing the necessity of defunding big abortion and urging the Senate to take action.
