Featured Article: "Toothy Cows and Why They're Relevant"
By Annabella Salvucci
I asked my 12 year old sister what I should write about for the SFL newsletter, and she said without hesitance that I should write about toothy cows. At first I thought it was silly, but I realized I have no better idea, so I might as well.
Toothy cows are an animal featured in the Wingfeather Saga, a fantasy trilogy about a family trying to restore their dynasty. Toothy cows are exactly that: cows with long dripping fangs; and if my memory doesn't fail me they eat people along with just about everything else. They are not the most gruesome creature in the Wingfeather Saga by any means, but play a role of being frightening in an almost funny way. To the readers a toothy cow is such an odd phenomenon that they have become the brunt of the Wingfeather fandom.
In the Wingfeather Saga there are also more frightful creatures called Fangs. They are evil and rational reptiles who spend their time enslaving children. They terrorize the towns in the story and instill fear within every family. Toothy cows are funny, Fangs are not.
In our world we're faced with so many Fangs. There are ideas, concepts, ideologies, occurrences, and instances which scare us. There are things that tear families apart and actions that cannot be undone. We look at the chaos and we see those same malicious reptiles living within it. The Fangs are everywhere, just like in the series, patrolling streets in the dark of night looking for victims to prey on. So many of the problems we face seem to us like Fangs. But unlike the creatures in a fantasy story, facing a Fang is a choice. We can turn these monsters, metaphorically speaking, from Fangs into toothy cows. The way we view issues changes when we change. Instead of seeing something as a hopeless and heartless lizard which we could never fight, we have the choice to look at everything like we would look at a toothy cow. It's still just as formidable, but somehow so much less intimidating. Having to fix a toothy cow of a problem makes you want to laugh.
Evidently, this group is all about stopping abortion. To most of us, that is facing a Fang. Abortion is murder, abortion is ugly and terrible, its supporters are viscous. It is a haunting problem that nobody can seem to rid of. But seeing it as a Fang is, yet still, a choice. Feeling depressed about this is a choice. Despair is a choice. Being frightened is a choice. For we can turn any problem we face into a toothy cow, a sort of problem that is silly and nearly fun. Seeing abortion as a toothy cow, albeit strange, makes us realize that anything can be laughed at. The deadliest and the darkest become a peculiarity. We no longer fear the danger because we see that the danger itself is just as silly as humanity. We see that the most degraded human still has that light of being as much a fool as we are. The chaos we cause is nothing but a toothy cow. It can kill you, but it's just silly enough for you not to be frightened.
And so I apologize for this peculiar article, but I hope I have demonstrated why toothy cows are relevant. Thank you all, and goodnight.

St. Joseph Memorare
Remember, O most pure spouse
of the Virgin Mary,
my beloved Patron,
that never it has been heard
that anyone invoked your patronage
and sought your aid
without being comforted.
Inspired by this confidence I come to you
and fervently commend myself to you.
Despise not my petition,
O dearest foster father of our Redeemer,
but accept it graciously.
Amen.

Okay, Lucy is probably on the verge of firing me or something but let's be honest: nothing is going on in the pro life world and everybody is too focused on the Iran war to care anyway. There is nothing of relevance or interest in the news. If there was you would have heard about it long before. Anyway, on to upcoming events.
